Sudokumo's mobile sudoku has tutoring tools that help players identify the correct answer or tell them when they've entered the wrong one.

Another article on the Sudoku craze - and now allows another way to play on your cell phone. How it has captured the minds of everyone in Britain and further afield. It’s a simple concept. Take a 9 by 9 grid, split that into 9 areas (each 3 by 3) and write in the numbers 1 through 9, ensuring that…

* No number is repeated in a horizontal line.
* No number is repeated in a vertical line.
* No number is repeated in each 3 by 3 area.

AAS RecommendedAll SuDoKu puzzles start with a pre-populated grid for you to work from. And with simple rules like that, no flash interface needed, it’s no surprise that there has been a bit of an explosion of SuDoKu applications across the Symbian platforms. And up till SuDoKu Professional (from ZingMagic), they all followed roughly the same pattern. A grid where you could add numbers, a certain number of built in puzzles, and the ability to enter a puzzle by hand (be it from a newspaper, online web site, or anywhere else)."

A review of a Sudoku computer solver - like one is almost like all the rest out there...

Robert

Sudoku Scramble: Mayer's Overlook Scores First

Sudoku Scramble: Mayer's Overlook Scores First: "Sudoku Scramble: Mayer's Overlook Scores First
August 01, 2005
By Patrick J. This morning among other things I broached the business of our being abused about flags, which I know doth trouble Sir W. Batten, but I care not. At noon being invited I went with Sir George and Mr. Coventry to Sir W. To the office again, and in the evening walked to Deptford (Cooper with me talking of mathematiques), to send a fellow to prison for cutting of buoy ropes, and to see the difference between the flags sent in now-a-days, and I find the old ones, which were much cheaper, to be wholly as good. Talk about a typo!!

"I'm really not impressed. I've just been tackling the three Sudoku puzzles in the Times, and have managed to complete all three. Go me. But when I read the actual newspaper, I was absolutely astounded to learn that J. K. Rowling is an apparent practitioner of necromancy.

What?

What indeed. I quote:

'You do not have to share J.K. Rowling's passion for necromancy to be troubled by the number 13. All you have to share is common superstition. For if all the copies of Harry Potter ever sold were to be placed in piles of 13 around the world, the statistical likelihood of anyone walking past them subsequently falling through an open manhole beggars belief.'

Necromancy? Don't they mean numeromancy? Or numerology? Or, at the very least, something to do with numbers, as opposed to communicating with the dead? I bet any fundamentalist Christian reading The Times today has become even more convinced of the evil influences inherent in Harry Potter, especially now that the author is apparently into raising the dead. Poor old J. K. Rowling's going to have to work hard to shake that one off, and all because of a typo, too."

I have to agree..one typo and you can be doomed. This is a set of three Sudoku puzzles (Easy, Intermediate, and Hard) on a simple page for easy printing. When I was working on the Sudoku Solver, I was able to modify part of the core script to actually create new puzzles, and so created a database of about 6,000 of them (between assuring randomness and uniqueness, and accommodating my so-so programming skills, this took about a week to run!) For each, I kept track of how many steps it took for the Solver script to find a solution, and I’m using that metric to rate the puzzle difficulty. A second database keeps track of which puzzles to print for what day (no repeats!) through (so far) the last day of 2006.

I think I still have a few bugs in the works. I was showing off the Solver the other day to a friend and I can almost swear that at one point she pressed the “New” button and a Sudoku board with a lone “1″ in the center square appeared. That just can’t be right."

Boy that would be very fiendish...1 given number. Talk about doing some major work. So maybe if I do a dress-up sudoku I can really pull in the visitors!"

Can you imagine the lines at the toy stores for the new hit toy for Christmas??

Robert

World Record Time for solving Sudoku puzzle (maybe)....

"a couple of days after the first sudoku appeared in the herald, somebody wrote in a letter saying 'sudoku ruined my saturday'. i think i laughed then, coz even though it took me 1hr to finish the first one, it was immensely satisfying when i finished it and i didn't think it was too hard.

a dozen sudokus later, me and jo got stuck on this 'hard' one that i cut out from the australian. we pored over it for a couple of hours while not listening to some psych lecture, and then got other people to try.... finally we decided to give it to baobao."

At least the puzzle was finally solved...but don't call Guiness for the world record....

Tribune Media Services to Launch Sudoku Puzzle in July

CHICAGO, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Sudoku puzzle that has become a worldwide phenomenon and daily obsession for puzzle aficionados will be syndicated by Tribune Media Services beginning July 18. It's purely an 'x-equations-with-y-unknowns' sort of thing. You could waste a lot of time working one of these out if you're a compulsive person. A good tool would save you from that fate...

So, I decided to make a little wizard to help solve sudoku. I didn't want to just brute-force my way to a solution - that's not very elegant, and it could be a possibly a longish runtime. No, what I made is a sort of assistant - it helps makes clear which cells are constrained or not, and then lets you rapidly click around and find out if a new choice will 'fit' or not. It's a satisfying blend of man and machine - you poke around with a little trial-and-error guessing while the computer helps you get it right."

What will Martin think of next...a rabbit out of the hat?
Robert

Here comes the bride...

jospark@blogspot.com: "'You would imagine that with such a name this puzzle originated in Japan, but it has been around for many years in the UK.
