TODAY the Fiji Times brings you the puzzle that has taken the world by storm. Sudoku has been around for more than 200 years, but only in the past 12 months has it become a worldwide craze. Don't be put off by the appearance of the puzzle. There are no mathematics involved, but rather a process of logical thinking and elimination.

So much for being able to lie on the beach and rest now. One of the last romantic islands have been hit by the craze!!

Sudoku and Other Diversions

My wife, having been told by friends in Europe that Sudoku, the Japanese [1] number-grid puzzle, was all the rage there, asked me to find some Sudokus and teach her how to solve them. A Google search disclosed a website with billions of Sudoku puzzles, a Wikipedia article with the puzzle’s history and mathematics, and dozens of other sites which (as the little girl wrote in her book report) “told me more than I wanted to know.”

I tried a few Sudokus and found that they could be solved by logical inference without any guesswork. My wife caught on to the method quickly and is now happily puzzling away.

Guess it is okay for Blogger to remove my blogs - and then after 1+ month to say "oops, we are sorry" and by the way, someone has your old URL but here is another one you can use.

After I have built in all the traffic to the OLD one. It wasn't MY fault they removed my blog, it was Bloggers. I'm sorry, but that excuse of "sorry" doesn't cut it. People work hard on their blogs and if the service provider oops, then they should reobtain the old one back.

I have been using the old one for over 1 year now so I have some very loyal customers and then for Blogger to remove the blog and take 1+ month to get back to me is not fair to me nor the customers. I don't think they would like it their hosting provider came back to them after 1 month of turning off their hosting and saying sorry either.

Gadget: New ways to play Sudoku

The sudoku movement continues to grow, and there is a mini-industry springing up to sell the puzzle game in a variety of new forms.

Although sudoku has long been worked on paper, as a game of mathematical logic, it is perfectly suited for digital devices, which can easily be programmed with simple formulas that keep generating puzzles. Also, it is easy to play on a cellphone touch pad and can played anywhere in the world without translation.

Companies say they are seeing strong interest in their mobile sudoku games.

Howard Tomlinson, chief executive of mobile-game maker Astraware Ltd. estimates that there are dozens of different versions of mobile sudoku — roughly 20 or so for Palm and Windows Mobile devices alone. Astraware's sudoku game, with billions of puzzles, is currently the eighth most popular of some 20,000 software downloads that are available for Palm devices.

While Astraware's software is geared toward pricier multipurpose gadgets, Sudokumo.com recently launched a mobile sudoku game that can be downloaded to most cell phones. The company, based in Guildford, U.K., says it has sold 7,500 games worldwide. Sudokumo's mobile sudoku has tutoring tools that help players identify the correct answer or tell them when they've entered the wrong one.

Another article on the Sudoku craze - and now allows another way to play on your cell phone. As I mentioned before, seems there is no limit to how many items will play it...before you know it, you'll be playing sudoku on your coffee maker!!

If JK is worried - she has other issues than Harry Potter..namely after the initial sales figure...so I doubt she is.

It might have to do with the fact that people (maybe the UK and Americans) might be able to grasp numbers better than pictures.
Maybe also they think the pictures are too "kid like" to be respected as well.

Heck, it can take over your life. I have a friend who struggled off and on with a Sudoku puzzle for weeks before finally trashing it.

Sudoku (I always want to spell it Soduku, for reasons I can't explain) appears very simple at first glance, with the numbers 1 to 9 scattered about nine vertical and nine horizontal columns.

Interestingly, any nine symbols will work, because it's not really a numbers game, it's a logic game. If you hit shift on your computer, 123456789 become !@#$ %^&*() While those symbols are just as applicable, numbers make solving the puzzle easier."

Hope the poor person didn't confuse the ( with !....

J.K Rowling is a necromancer ? Talk about a typo!!

"I'm really not impressed. I've just been tackling the three Sudoku puzzles in the Times, and have managed to complete all three. Go me. But when I read the actual newspaper, I was absolutely astounded to learn that J. K. Rowling is an apparent practitioner of necromancy.

What?

What indeed. I quote:

'You do not have to share J.K. Rowling's passion for necromancy to be troubled by the number 13. All you have to share is common superstition. For if all the copies of Harry Potter ever sold were to be placed in piles of 13 around the world, the statistical likelihood of anyone walking past them subsequently falling through an open manhole beggars belief.'

Necromancy? Don't they mean numeromancy? Or numerology? Or, at the very least, something to do with numbers, as opposed to communicating with the dead? I bet any fundamentalist Christian reading The Times today has become even more convinced of the evil influences inherent in Harry Potter, especially now that the author is apparently into raising the dead. Poor old J. K. Rowling's going to have to work hard to shake that one off, and all because of a typo, too."

"“The Sudoku Challenge” is now available daily. This is a set of three Sudoku puzzles (Easy, Intermediate, and Hard) on a simple page for easy printing. When I was working on the Sudoku Solver, I was able to modify part of the core script to actually create new puzzles, and so created a database of about 6,000 of them (between assuring randomness and uniqueness, and accommodating my so-so programming skills, this took about a week to run!) For each, I kept track of how many steps it took for the Solver script to find a solution, and I’m using that metric to rate the puzzle difficulty. A second database keeps track of which puzzles to print for what day (no repeats!) through (so far) the last day of 2006.

I think I still have a few bugs in the works. I was showing off the Solver the other day to a friend and I can almost swear that at one point she pressed the “New” button and a Sudoku board with a lone “1″ in the center square appeared. That just can’t be right."

For the very young, let them play with colors and shapes. You can play on a smaller grid, where the boxes are just 2 x 2. It's great for pre-schoolers getting ready to take their first steps in reasoning. In fact, this is a good game for absolute beginners of any kind, or for anyone wanting a quick game.

So use smaller grids and use colored shapes...and you'll have your young one up to speed!

"I'm not sure if you have seen these Sudoku (soduku?) puzzles that have become all the rage recently. I must admit they passed me by for a while, not being a crossword puzzle kind of person.

While waiting at the airport the other week I gave one a go, and got quite into it - I managed to do a moderate and a diffucult one and was feeling quite pleased with myself.

You basically need to fill in a 9x9 grid with numbers, so that each row only contains the numbers 1-9 once, and each 3x3 box can also only contain 1-9 once. It sounds easy, but can be quite tricky to complete."

This one is definitely a beginner's puzzle...don't rattle your brain too much!!

The local paper has started carrying Sudoku, a grid-logic puzzle that involves placing numbers into rows, columns, and boxes. It's purely an 'x-equations-with-y-unknowns' sort of thing. You could waste a lot of time working one of these out if you're a compulsive person. A good tool would save you from that fate...

So, I decided to make a little wizard to help solve sudoku. I didn't want to just brute-force my way to a solution - that's not very elegant, and it could be a possibly a longish runtime. No, what I made is a sort of assistant - it helps makes clear which cells are constrained or not, and then lets you rapidly click around and find out if a new choice will 'fit' or not. It's a satisfying blend of man and machine - you poke around with a little trial-and-error guessing while the computer helps you get it right."

What will Martin think of next...a rabbit out of the hat?

So Much For Subtlety: Back to the rat race...: "Began writing a little Java program this afternoon to do the Mumbai Mirror's daily Sudoku challenge. I've got it deducing things to the point where it correctly fills up about half the grid - the only problem is that it can't go any further. Looks like my friend Sagar was wrong - as far as I can see, there isn't enough information in the problem to uniquely determine each grid value. At some point, you probably have to guess and see if things work out that way...

The above was from Nadeem...I beg to differ on the fact that you have to do use brute force. More often times than not, one just has to find the clue that will work the path to the solution.

In case you haven't heard, the newest craze sweeping the globe is an incredibly innovative game appearing in many major papers in the U.S. and elsewhere known as Sudoku. You are given a set of 81 squares, in 9 3x3 sets. The numbers 1-9 must appear in every horizontal row, every vertical column, and every 3x3 box. It's so much fun...I solved today's puzzle in the Washington Post comics. I advise anyone and everyone to try it out. The sense of accomplishment when everything is right is incredible. I can see why the rest of the world is captivated."

As you can see, more and more people are getting addicted to the Sudoku craze.
